How does Propecia ® stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth?
Men with male pattern hair loss have an increased level of a substance called DHT in their scalps. Propecia ® blocks the formation of DHT and arrests the development of male pattern hair loss in men. DHT is Dihydrotestosterone which is a derivative of testosterone, one of the male hormones which fits neatly into the old school label of male pattern baldness. Testosterone is a specific male hormone which are generally classified as androgens that once again fits neatly into the scientific or medical tern for male pattern baldness which is androgenetic alopecia. Curiously enough Propecia's remarkable effectiveness as a cure for male pattern hair loss was discovered purely by accident during the clinical trials to determine the effectiveness of finasteride, the active ingredient in Propecia, in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that can cause problems with urine flow in mature men. As the prostate is unique to the male anatomy the coincidental impact of Propecia on the production of DHT was simply a lucky break discovered when the middle aged test subjects started growing hair!
Can Propecia be used with Minoxidil or Rogaine?
Absolutely! In fact the most potent and effective hair loss treatment available today is a combined approach using both Rogaine / Minoxidil and Propecia / Finasteride. Rogaine / Minoxidil does not
work as a DHT blocker but rather as a vasodilator (makes blood vessels open more) and its mechanism of operation in the promotion of hair growth and regrowth is not well understood although it is well documented in the clinical trials. Minoxidils' hair regrowth properties were also an accidental discovery during the clinical trials for determining the effectiveness of minoxidil in the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure in another group of mature males who mysteriously started growing hair. Since Propecia and Minoxidil work by totally different means they do not interfere with each other and in fact work very well together to produce the most effective hair loss treatment on the market today.
How well does Propecia ® grow hair?
In the clinical trials for the vertex ("bald spot"), 83% of the men tested stopped their hair loss based on hair count, 66% had visible re-growth as rated by independent dermatologists and 80% were rated as improved by clinical doctors.
Where does Propecia ® grow hair?
Propecia is most effective in the vertex area know as the bald spot to male pattern hair loss sufferers. It is also demonstrated to be efective through the anterior (front) mid-scalp area and then tends to have a decreasing effect as you move forward toward the actual hairline. There is not sufficient evidence that Propecia ® works for recession at the temporal areas or for restoration of a receding hairline.
How fast does Propecia ® work to stop hair loss and start regrowth?
You may need to take Propecia ® daily for 3 months or more to see visible results. Propecia ® may not re-grow all your hair. And if you stop using this product, you will gradually lose the hair you have gained.
